How To Choose Your Motorcycle Boots
When it comes to selecting the perfect pair of motorcycle boots, there are a few different factors you are going to want to watch out for.
Of course, not everyone has the same preferences, so it really comes down to your individual needs in the end – but you should be informed before you make your choice. Here are a few important things to keep in mind when shopping for your new motorcycle boots:
Height
The boot height you are looking for depends on the kind of riding you typically do.
Off-road riding generally calls for a taller pair of boots – at least covering most of your shin. You’ll want the extra protection against branches, spraying gravel or whatever else your legs might come into contact with. Not to mention, in case you crash, your shins and calves will be protected from scrapes and road burn.
If you ride a cruiser, the full shin coverage might feel unnecessary – especially if you tend to walk around in your boots during the day. It is still recommended that you get something that will cover at least midway up your shin, protecting your ankles and Achilles.
A boot that rises over your ankles will leave your shins exposed, but it will at least support your ankles, which is crucial in the event of even a minor fall.
Sole
The sole of your motorcycle boot also largely depends on the kind of riding you normally do. A tougher sole will be more durable in a rocky, off-road environment, and give you longer wear out of the boot in the long run.
However, the softer your sole is, the more sensitive you will be to your brake and shifter pedals, giving you a little more control over your motorcycle. For road riding and everyday use, most riders prefer a softer sole.
Remember that you will always want your sole to be oil resistant and have good traction for riding in wet conditions.
Weatherproofing and Ventilation
Nothing can kill a long ride faster than wet feet.
Weatherproof, or at least weather resistant, motorcycle boots are essential for riding in areas that see a lot of rain or snow. They will keep your feet warm and protected, and they will last longer in stormy conditions.
On the other hand, if you are generally riding in dry, hot areas, you'll want to look for boots with ventilated material. The right ventilation will prevent your feet from getting too hot, and make wearing heavy boots in hot weather much more bearable.
Whatever weather you are riding in, make sure you are taking good care of your boots. Dry them or wipe them off after every ride, and you will get a lot more use out of them.
Different Styles and Types
Not all motorcycle boots are made equal. There are many different styles out there, varying by riding style. It’s important to get the right boots for the type of riding you are doing. Here are some of the most common types of motorcycle boots you can find:
Cruiser or Touring Boots
Cruiser boots are your classic example of a motorcycle boot. They are casual and comfortable to wear, whether you are walking or riding, and – let’s face it – they just look cool.
Most cruiser boots are made from heavy leather and tend to be stiffer than other, casual wear leather boots. They may come with a side zipper or pull on, and they are generally mod-height, enough to cover and support your ankles, much like cowboy boots. They will have a tough rubber sole and a slightly raised heel, and plenty of extra protection around your feet.
Cruiser motorcycle boots are good for most casual rising. However, if you are more of a competitive or an off-road rider, this will not be the right style for you.
Racing or Track Boots
Motorcycle raising is dangerous, and so requires a boot that is going to keep you as safe as possible. Track boots are built to be extremely durable. They are usually made from heavy leather with plastic or metal armoring, to protect your feet, ankles, and shins in the likely event that they make contact with the pavement during a race.
Track boots are a lot stiffer than other styles of motorcycle boots. They are designed to fit close to your foot and support your joints – for that reason, they aren't too comfortable to walk around in when you are not on your motorcycle.
Unless you are a racer, racing boots are probably not necessary. They do provide the highest level of protection, though, for racers and intense riders alike.
Riding Shoes
Riding shoes, or short boots, are the choice of riders who want to be comfortable on their feet as well as their bike and prefer a lower boot.
Riding shoes tend to be a little more comfortable than full motorcycle boots, without sacrificing all of the safety features. They are just high enough to support your ankles and Achilles and made out of stiffer leather than other shoes.
They should have a tough sole and supportive padding around the ankles. Most short boots are weatherproof or at least weather resistant, and many brands are designed to look much like a normal pair of tennis shoes. Riding shoes are a good option if you want to be able to wear the same boots on your bike and off.
Features of Motorcycle Boots
There are many different features of motorcycle boots which will give you the best use out of them. It is also important to keep these features in mind when purchasing motorcycle boots in order to find the best pair for you. Some of these features include protection, comfort, and control.
Height
Because motorcycles get very hot because of the engine, motorcycle boots should be able to cover up at the least to the ankle. Some people do not like to wear high-top boots because they are not incredibly flexible, but these types of boot do provide more protection when riding.
If you are not careful, you can really injure yourself by getting your foot trapped underneath the fall. You can sprain or break your ankle in some cases. That is why it is especially important that your boots give enough support to your ankle.
You also want to provide good protection for your shins and legs. Opting for high length boots will offer ample protection for your legs. Shin protective boots are very hard around the shin and leg area. This might sound uncomfortable, but buying the right boots like touring boots are specifically designed for this type of protection.
Material
Typical walking shoes are made out of soft leather or canvas material. This type of material isn’t sturdy enough to withstand the wear and tear that occurs when you are riding a motorcycle or hitting the asphalt. Most motorcycle boots circumvent this problem by being made out of high-quality leather materials that offer great resistance.
Some of the best motorcycle boots offer double or triple stitching in the sensitive areas of the foot. You want to be sure to invest in boots that are made of treated leather in order that they are weather protected and water resistant. Untreated leather boots can absorb water as opposed to repelling it.
Leather boots will also keep your feet cooler and drier in the summer. Leather is also a breathable material which will allow your feet to aerate. Nobody wants moist feet after they finish their ride.
Construction
Paying attention to the overall construction of the motorcycle boot is also extremely important. Double and triple stitching can ensure that your boots won’t fall apart after a dangerous accident.
You will also want to look at how the sole of the boot is constructed. A glued on sole won’t last as long as one that has been stitched on. So definitely opt for the stitched on sole when choosing your boots.
Closures
The closure of your motorcycle boot is important to consider. Velcro and laces are really your only options to choose from. The most common choice is laces as they can provide a more precise fit and are good for easy put on and take off.
Unfortunately, laces can also be a little dangerous as they can get caught in the motorcycle parts or can constantly come undone. If you’re really wanting laces, look for boots with a buckle closure over the laces.
Soles
You want to invest in soles that offer the right amount of grip as well as shock absorption. A softer sole will have the tendency to grip the footpeg of the motorcycle better, but because the sole is soft your boots will break down faster. A hard sole will obviously be more durable, but it won’t provide as much grip.
You do want to be extra careful in making sure that the soles of your boots are oil resistant. Riding in the street can kick up the slick oil that is on the road, but oil resistant boots will keep you steady when setting your feet down while stopped.
Why You Should Wear Motorcycle Boots
Motorcycle boots actually have a purpose other than making you look like a cool rider. Motorcycle riding comes with great risk so it is definitely recommended that you equip yourself with motorcycle boots. Your feet are an important part of your body and they need to be protected with shock absorbing boots.
Motorcycle boots offer impact and open wound protection. They won’t be vulnerable to injury when wearing the right boots. They offer support for your feet and your ankles.
Your boots should also be comfortable and weatherproof. You won’t have as much fun riding if your feet are cold or wet or if your toes are scrunched up trying to grip the pegs.
All in all, though, motorcycle boots are needed for protection. But that doesn’t mean you can’t look like a badass while being safe.
Conclusion
Choosing the right motorcycle boots can make all the difference as your riding. Not only do you want comfort you also need protection. It definitely isn’t a one size fits all decision you can make. We hope that this guide can help you find the best motorcycle boots for you so you can have the best riding experience possible.
