If you're lucky enough to have a pup (or cat!) who is on board with taking a ride on your motorcycle with you, you're one of the lucky ones.
Not all dogs are cut out for life on the road. If you've got a pup that is road-worthy, here are a few tips for making sure they are comfortable, and you have a great time.
1. Get Them A Good Seat
It doesn't matter if your dog is small or large; they need a comfy place to sit. While most small dogs will be okay with sitting on your lap with their feet perched on the gas tank, this isn't an excellent solution for longer rides. You're going to need a solid pet carrier
There are plenty of excellent motorcycle dpet carriers available that will keep your pet safe and comfortable for the ride.
2. Get A Pet-Friendly Hotel
This may seem obvious, but especially with small dogs, people seem to assume it's okay to just sneak your dog in.
Most hotels don't allow pets unless they are service animals. This means that you're going to have to put your dog in a bag to take them outside and take extra care to make sure they don't' bark.
Do yourself a favor and call ahead to make sure the place you're staying is pet-friendly. It will eliminate a stressor for you, and make your pet more comfortable.
3. Pack Any Medications
Even if you're just taking a weekend trip, if your dog is prone to any illnesses or flare-ups and you have medication on hand, pack them in your pet carrier or on your bike. I have a dog with IVDD, which means I almost always have medication on hand in case she has a flare-up.
If you're a long way from home and your dog gets hurt or sick with something that could be prevented by bringing along their medications, you're going to have a ruined trip.
4. Plan Stopping Areas For Your Dog
If you're taking a long motorcycle road trip, check the route for dog parks, or regular parks along the way. The same way that you get tired from riding all day, your dog can experience the same things.
Give them a chance for a little relief outside of just peeing at a rest area. Give them a chance to run around and smell the roses.
5. Bring Extra Water and a Bowl
You never know when you might get stuck somewhere on your bike. You want always to be prepared for the worst but expect the best. Make sure you have a bowl on hand and extra water in case you get stopped in an area where you don't have access to these things.
This will ensure your dog has its basic needs covered, even in a worst-case scenario.
Have Fun!
Traveling with your dog, especially on a motorcycle, can be an enjoyable experience. It gives you time to relax and bond with your fur baby. So kick back, listen to some tunes, and enjoy the ride.
